Etymology

Ullerwood (lost, 101–805838), Ullerwood 1842 OS, (castellum de ) Ullerwda , Ullerwell 1173 (l12) Earw, Orm1, Orm2, Ullerswode c.1200Fitt , Hulreswud H2 (17) Orm2, Hulerswood John (17) ib, Bulriswode c.1300Fitt , 'Wulfrīc's wood', from the OE  pers.n. Wulfrīc and wudu . This wood formerly extended eastward to Shadow Moss 1242 in Northern Etchells and to Oversleyford in Styal 1230, (Vulverichelei 12, Ulresford 13), v. Orm1 iii307–8. It gave its name to a castle held by Hamo de Mascy against Henry II, probably sited at Castle Hill infra , cf. another at Castle Hill in Bowdon 16supra , v. Orm1 loc. cit. and 1 405n, Orm2 iii 586, Earw 1 55, 330, Sheaf3 18 (4291). Wulfrīc may be one of the DB tenants of Butley 1193, v. Tait 213n. The spelling Bul - is discussed 15 supra .
