Etymology

'The water-meadow', 'the pasture', v. hulm , pasture . The later name arises because c.1800 this house superseded Birtles Old Hall 73supra as the seat of the manor of Birtles, v. Orm1 iii304. The original name appears in Hum Covert and Hulmes infra .
