Etymology

'Cur-bitch clearing', v. curre , bicce , lēah . The spellings -breche -, -brugg ' indicate confusion of -brich - (with intrusive -r -) with brēc , bryce or brycg . Sur - may be due to Anglo-Norman influence (ANInfl 39), but cf. Bowdon 330infra . In the early references the place is part of Wilmslow and Fulshaw, cf. Oak Fm 232infra , a seat of the Corbishley family (Earw ii138). Carbishley Brook 1831 Bry is the same as Bentley Brook 1831 ib, 'brook at a grassy clearing', v. beonet , lēah . It joins Pedley Brook 32supra .
