, probably identical with le Hagclif 1294 YD vi, Haklyff Banke (sic)1529 YD vi,Cliff or Hartcliffe 1623Bretton 23, Hagley Bank 1720WYEnr 172,Hartley Brook 1632 SheffMan, Harley Brook 1771 M, Atley Bank 1841 O.S.; the later form is probably 'hart cliff or clearing', v. heorot,clif (replaced by lēah); the first el. of the older form is doubtless hǫgg'clearing'; there was a local family of Hartley (17 PRThlfreq ) , and its name doubtless affected the form of the older p.n .
