Etymology

'Scyt(t)el's farmstead', v. -ing 4 , tūn . The OE  pers.n. Scyt (t )el is not recorded, but is assumed from such p.ns. as Shillington Bd 174, Shitlington Nb 178. The earlier spellings in Sit -, Sil - are due to AN influence (IPN 113). On the other hand, the recent spelling Sitlington which has no etymological significance has been adopted from motives of delicacy, as were the substitution in Littleworth i, 49supra , and the early creation of the new names Middlestown, Netherton and Overton for Middle, Nether and Over Shitlington (infra ).
