, Gaitscarthe , Gaytskarthe 1578Comm , Gatescar 1823M, Gate Scarth 1859OS , ' pass frequented by goats ' , v. geit , skarð ; this is the pass by which Brant Street (supra ) crosses over the mountains to Longsleddale , but as the forms are late they may be adaptations of ME  gate-scarth ' road pass ' or of Goatscar (i, 161supra ) across the pass in Longsleddale .
