Etymology

To Stone or To'ther, a rocking stone, le Tottiston 1279Ass 17, Toston 1540DRH . This would probably contain a word from the stem tot - 'unstable' (which is found in ME  toteren 'to totter', toty 'unsteady', NCy dial. toit 'tumble, an upset', tot 'to totter, sway about', etc.), and stān 'stone'; To 'ther is probably for the pronominal the other , referring to the stone on which the To Stone rested.
