Etymology

Naddle Beck, Naddle Ho [ˈnadl], Naddale 1309 Pat (p), 1409Lowth (Sh 23), 1625FF , 1777 M, Naddall 1580, 1590 PR, Naddle 1773 PR(Brt). Cf. Naddle (Cu 313), which has been derived from ON  naddr 'point, nail, wedge' and dæl (dalr). If so, naddr is used figuratively of a topographical feature like the point or sharp end of a ridge or hill, here the ridge of Naddle Forest between Naddle Beck and Hawes Water. But the word might have been used as a fish- name, as it is in Norw  dial. nadde 'Salmo alpinus ' (cf. also Shetland naddi 'codling').
