Etymology

Studrank (lost), Studrande 1683 PR, Studranke 1686, 1696 ib, Stoodran (c )k (e )1709, 1740 ib, Stuthrancke 1714, 1716 ib. Possibly a compound of OE  studu 'prop, post', e.ModE  stud 'tree-trunk' and e.ModE  ranke 'a row of objects (such as trees)', the name doubtless describing 'a row of tree-trunks or posts'.
