Murray Lodge

Other OS name in the Parish of Tinwell

Etymology

, cf. Mount Murray Wood 1806 Map . The only Mt . Murray which the editor has been able to trace is in the former Australian territory of Papua . Australia 's eastern and north - eastern coast was explored only in 1770 by Captain Cook which leaves little time for the transference of the name to Rutland by 1806 . If colonial exploration is not the source of this name , then an attachment of Mount to the surname Murray with reference to a minor feature of local topography is possible ; compare , perhaps , with Mt . Alstoe in Burley parish , roughly of the same date .
