Jollity Fm

Other OS name in the Parish of Halstock

Historical Forms

  • Jolyf 1350 Add 18

Etymology

( Kelly ) , no doubt from the abstract noun jollity , perhaps as a whimsical antidote to the more sober virtues like Care , Charity , Reasonableness , Toleration and Understanding bestowed as names of his fields by Thomas Hollis in the 18th cent. , v. note under f. ns . infra ; the occurrence of John Jolyf 1350 (18) Add ( from ME  jolif ' jolly ' ) in connection with Halstock is an interesting coincidence .
