, 1799ERO , Harford 1811 OS, Harvard 1842TA , one of Thomas Hollis 's commemorative names ( v. note under f. ns . infra ) , an allusion to John Harvard ( 1607 – 38 ) who settled in Massachusetts , and endowed the university which now bears his name ; Hollis 's great - uncle , Thomas Hollis , was also a benefactor of that university .
