Etymology

is Garbol dich 1408RobinsonT, Garbell Ditch 1600 ib., Carbuncle or Garbell Ditch 1840 ib . The original name would seem to contain the word garboil , ' confusion, disturbance , ' hitherto not recorded before 1548 ( cf. NED s. v . ) with a strange later corruption . The interpretation of the name is obscure .
