Etymology

Pickledean (6″) is pytteldene 939 BCS 734, Pykkeldean 1570 PembSurv, Piggledean 1815 O.S., Speckledean 1820 G. The first element is OE  pyttel , 'mouse-hawk,' cf. Studies 91. Hence 'hawk-valley.' Interchange of [t] and [k] is common. For sp cf. Smatcham supra 302.
