Etymology

'Raven's burh' or 'Hræfn 's burh.' Hræfn is the OE  hræfn , 'raven,' possibly used here as a personal name. In late Latin documents of the OE  period the church and diocese of Ramsbury occasionally appear as ecclesia and parochia Coruinensis . Just ten miles north-north-east of Ramsbury there was another hremnesbyrig (BCS 687, 899, 1121) identified by Grundy (Berkshire Charters 26) with Rams Hill in Uffington (Berks).
