Etymology

'Gorse hill', v. hvin , fjall , and cf. Whinfell (i, 142supra ) of the same origin. The hill over which the forest extends (v. forest ) is now called Quarrystone Bank; the park (v. park ) lies to the south of High Street; it was also called Oldparke de Qwynfell 1425BrStAcct 2, le Old parke 1523SheriffAcct 4d cf. also le Dereparke , the Parke Rayle (infra ).
