'Sheep hill or valley', v. ONb  scīp (with ON  Sk - as in Skipton supra ), dūn , denu . Apart from the DB spellings, dūn appears to be the common early form. For the assimilation to Skib - (before -d -) cf. Shibden iii, 92supra .
