Etymology

Elsey, Elsho 1266MinAcct , Neleshou 1276 RH, Eyleshou 1278 Ch, 1278 YD i, Eleshow (e )1290 Whit 383, 1301 YI, Elsowe 1422 YI, Elsewoode 1577 Holinshed, Elsey 1596 PRSk. There is some ambiguity in the spellings and though Neles - could be from OIr  Nel , Níall (borrowed as ON  Njáll ) and Eyles - from ON  Egill , most spellings point to the OE  pers.n. El (l )i . v. haugr 'mound, hill' or hōh 'hill'.
