Etymology

This is probably a compound of OE  plega 'play, sports, game' and wīc 'a hamlet, a dependent farmstead, a building', corresponding to OE  pleg-stede or pleg-stōw 'sport place, place where games were held'. But the OE  pers.n. Plecga is also possible, but less likely because of the absence of medial -e - in most of the earlier spellings.In either case medial -g - is due to ON influence. The later Pled - is merely a substitution for Pleg -.
