Etymology

'House with a loft or upper chamber', v. lopt-hús. This compound occurs several times in Y as Lofthouse (Harewood) pt. iv, (Fountains Earth) pt. v, (Sedbergh) pt. vi, Loftus (Staveley) pt. v infra , YN 140, Loftsome YE 243, and it was often originally a plur. name, sometimes as here in the dat.plur. (v. -um ).
