Etymology

'The monks' farm', v. munuc , tūn . The allusion is lost, but the place was in the district belonging to Christ's Church (later the Priory of the Holy Trinity), York, at the time of the DB survey; it is certainly much older than the grant of lands here to Fountains Abbey in the twelfth century. 'Moor' (v. Moor Monkton Moor infra ) to distinguish it from Nun Monkton across the R. Nidd (v, 2infra ).
