Etymology

Mickletown, Magna villa de Metheley 1354 Meth, (the ) Mickletown (e )1405 MethMR, 1561 PRMth, 1644 WillY, the Mykletowne 1522 TestLds. v. micel , tūn ; the use of ME  toun to denote a part of a village, a second village of the same name, or a new hamlet within the township, is common in YW, as in Old Town i, 303supra , Westerton 176, Middlestown 206, Hightown iii, 28, Chapeltown and Moor Town (Chapel Allerton) pt. iv, etc. infra ; it is also used when combined with township names to denote the village proper as in Soyland Town iii, 69, Sowerby Town iii, 149, Warley Town iii, 126infra . Some of these names were alternative to older names and consist of the original affix with to (w )n , as in Old Town, Westerton, Middlestown, Littletown iii, 28, etc.
