Etymology

The variant spellings are due to ON  influence (occasional -sk - for -sh -) or OFr influence (t - for th -, -s - for -sh -) and all point to an OE  þresc -feld , which, as Moorman suggested, meant 'open land where threshing was done', v. þresc , feld .
