Etymology

On topographical grounds this is likely to be 'farmstead near the rushing stream', v. hlynn , tūn .The village stands on Linton Beck, a swift-flowing stream. But it could also be the common Linton in the sense 'flax farm', v. līn , cf. the local f.n. Lynelands (infra ) and Linton v, 29supra .
