Etymology

Knoup (lost), Gnup 12, 1206, c. 1246 Font, 1239 Ch, Gnoupe 1198 Fount, 1328 Banco, 1544 Star, 1597 FF, Cowesyde als. the Forest of Knoppe 1571 FF, the Forest of Knoupe 1850Lord . ON  gnúpr 'a peak', occurring in some Icel  p.ns., Gnúpr , Gnúpa , Lomagnúpr , etc. The location is not known. It is referred to in 'the forest or chace of Gnoup and Dernebroke [Darnbrook supra ] otherwyse Fountaynes Fellys ' (1544 Star); Cow Side (which is an alternative name) is the hill 3 miles east of Knowe Fell.
