Fountains Fell, Fontance Fell 1540 Fount, Fountaynes Fell (ys ), Fountain (e )s Fell (ys )1544 Star, 1571 FF, 1598 TC, Fonteyns Fell 1567 FF, Funtaines Fell , the Fell 1599, 1606 PRMl. v. fjall 'fell, mountain', named from Fountains Abbey, which owned extensive sheep pastures here (v, 191 supra ).
