Etymology

v. lacuc 'a small stream'; in 1577 the Laycock is described as a river (Whit 16). This el. occurs also in Leycroft Leys ii, 131supra and Lacock W 102. The modern form is due to ME  lengthening of -ă - in an open syllable. The cross referred to in the spellings is built into a wall on the road-side (cf. BfdAntq iii, 100 note).
