Etymology

'Hagena's enclosure' from the OE  pers.n. Hagena or possibly 'thorn enclosure' from an OE  hagen corresponding to OSax  hagin 'thorn-bush, enclosure' and worð. The former is more likely in view of the Hag (e )ne - spellings and the fact that worð is regularly combined with pers.ns. On the later form Hain - for Haun - cf. Phonol. § 3.
