Etymology

'Skammbein's valley', v. denu . The first el. is an ON  byname Skamm-bein 'short leg', which is not recorded independently but which occurs in the Icel  p.n. Scambeinstaþir (Lind BN) and a f.n. Scambaynkeld (N. Deighton) pt v infra ; it is parallel to such bynames as Skammfótr 'short foot', Skammhals 'short neck', etc. The spelling Scamban - is partly anglicised.
