Etymology

Ball Royd, Balrodebroke 1361 Arm, Balroyd (e )1479 ib, 1551 WillY, Balroid 1526 ib, Balderoide 1548 Stansf, 1590 FF. The place stands down the rounded end of the ridge which forms Longwood Edge, and the name could doubtless be a compound of OE  ball 'a ball, a rounded hill' and rod1 ; but the first el. may be the ME  surname Ball (e ).
