Etymology

'Cumbra's enclosure', v. worð . The first el. is the OE  pers.n. Cumbra , which occurs also in other p.ns. like Cumberwood Wo 193, Cumberworth L. This pers.n. is ultimately from PrWelsh  *Cumbroʒ 'the Welshman' (v. EPN i, 119, s.v. Cumbre ). Half denotes a half of the township with separate jurisdiction.
