Etymology

Since in the earliest spellings Roce - -c - would normally represent -ts - (cf. -s2 in EPN ii, 92), this is probably 'Hrut's island or water- meadow', from the ON  pers.n. Hrútr (gen.sg. Hrúts ) and holmr .The site is on the Ouse bank and too near that river to allow it to be identified with OE  Hrodlafes holm (11 supra ).
