Etymology

This may be 'farmstead associated with Heortla', v. -ing 4 , tūn , the first el. being an OE  pers.n. Heortla (found also in Hartlebury Wo 242), corresponding to OHG  Hirzil , Hirzula (FörstemannPN 845).But there was a hill here called Hart-hill (v. f.ns. infra ), and it is possible that this is the first el. with connective -ing 4 (v. EPN i, 296§ 7) and tūn , meaning 'farmstead near the hart-hill'.
