Etymology

Dibble's Bridge, Dib (b )les Bridge 1654 WillY, 1783 PRBrn, Dib (b )les brigg (e )1654, 1702 ib. This bridge crosses the R. Dibb (RNs.), whose name may be a back-formation from Dibble . The latter is to be connected with OE  dubb, dybb 'pool' (with the suffix -el ) or Dan  døbbel , Norw  dial. dypel 'deep place, pool' (cf. DaSN(Sj) xxiv), v. brycg .
