Etymology

'Brȳni's nook of land', v. halh (here the piece of land on which the village stands and which is within a bend of the R. Wharfe). The pers.n. is OE  Brȳni (a mutated form of Brūn ). The later metathesised forms Birn -, Burn - are normal.
