Etymology

Treading Bank, Treading Drain, Treading Field (6″) are (le ) Thre (e )dyng (e )1436SewersC , 1497Ct , Tyd Thre (e )dinge (end )1436, 1437SewersC , Tyd Thredyng 1438Sewers , Threding dike 1438 Imb, Tydd Treddyng 1493Wisb , Tyd Thredding 1570 Imb, Treading (Bank )1786Wisb , Treading Field c. 1840TA . Probably OE  *þrǣding , 'a threading, twisting,' from OE  þrǣd , 'thread,' from the root of OE  þrāwan , 'to twist,' an apt name for the bank which is probably old as it forms the boundary between Tydd and Newton. v. ing . For the type of name, cf. Trotton (PN Sx 44) where the first element is probably OE  *trædding , 'treading'.
