Grangehill Fm is Graines Hill c. 1600 (1724) BadesladeA , Greyns Hill 1650Wisb , Cranes Hill 1655 ib. Cf. Eegreine , le Egreindes , Tydde Eegreene , le Greendys 1436SewersC , le Egryndes 1438Sewers , Tydd Graynes 1455Wisb , Edgreynes (probably for (at T )edgreynes ) 1469 Pat.This is clearly dial. grain , 'fork of a tree, fork of a river' (ON  greinn ), with reference to the fork made by the Shire Drain and Lady Nunn's Old Eau (supra 7, 15) with Grange Dike (L) at Grangehill Corner.v. ēa and grain sb., 2 in EDD. For intrusive d in greindes and other forms cf. Jespersen i, 7, 61, Jordan § 202, Anm. For the combination nds , pronounced [ndʒ], the spelling nge has been substituted.
