Birch Fen (6″) is Burchfen 1621, 1657CCC , Birchffenn 1738 ib. It may perhaps be associated with Holdebreche 1240 Rams, Olbriche 1468CCC , Oldbryche 1489 ib., le Oldbridge , Byrcheseand 1552 ib., Old(e)bur (d )ge 1621, 1636, 1712 ib., Oldburgh 1728 ib. 'The old piece of newly-cultivated land,' v. eald , brǣc . For the change of breche to birch cf. that of brycg to burge , s. n. Cambridge supra 36.
