Etymology

OE  Cūfeling (a )-lēage (dat.), 'clearing of Cufela' or of his people. For such a pers. name in the strong form, v. Cowsden, PN Wo 230–1, and cf. Cullinghurst infra 367, v. ing , leah . The sound-development is irregular but the chain of forms, for which we are indebted to Mr Salzman, is beyond question.
