Etymology

'Steep place overgrown with beeches,' v. boc . Professor Ekwall suggests that the second element is from an unrecorded OE  stēap , cognate with OHG  stouf , 'cliff.' The rarity of the element accounts probably for occasional confusion with stiepel .
