Etymology

Flattenden is Flotindene 1279Ass (p), Flotindenn (e )t. Ed 2 IpmR, 1320 Misc, Flotynden 1288Ass (p), 1296 SR (p), Flottingden 1823 G. This would seem to be from OE  Flotingdenn (v. ing , denn ), 'the swine-pasture of Flota .' Such a pers. name is not on record, but we may compare flotanrycg in Wo (BCS 1282) and the OHG Flozo and Flozzolf in Förstemann (PN 512) and OE  flota , 'seaman.'
