Etymology
Pease Pottage is Peaspottage Gate in 1724 (B). According to Hurst's Horsham (163) it was a halting-place for prisoners, who had a meal here on their way to Horsham gaol. The first occurrence of the name in 1724 forbids one associating it, as has been suggested, with the guards who preceded George the Fourth on his way to Brighton, and who were supposed similarly to have fed here.
