Historical Forms

  • Redland 1535 VE
  • Reddlondes 1539 Dugdv.669

Etymology

Redland is Redland 1535 VE, Reddlondes 1539 Dugd v.669 and is identical with the place called Retherlonde 1305, Retherlonde mill 1310 Pens. The first element is OE  hryðer, 'cattle.'The development is curious but as Professor Levett points out to us the mention of it with Le feyre feld in the 1310 charter fixes it as Redland, which is just by Fair Lane infra 460.
