Etymology

'Roe-gate,' v. ra , geat , the 'gate' being probably that of some forest area. The Re - and Rey -forms are perhaps due to confusion with the fem. form ræge . When ra had become ro confusion seems also to have taken place with the numerous names beginning with row meaning 'rough' (cf. ruh), hence certain of the later spellings.
