Etymology

Buttleswell (lost) is Butleswell in 1278 (FF), Buteleswelle in 1454 (Pat) and appears as aqua de Butleswelle in Durf (39, 42d).It was the home of Norman de Butleswelle and Godfrey de Betleswelle in 1296 (SR). 'Stream (v. wielle) of Byttel .' For this pers. name v. Biddlesden (PN Bk 41). Close at hand was a place called Buttesw (o )rth (1278 FF, Durf 40d), which must contain the pers. name Bytti of which this is a derivative.
