Historical Forms

  • Laneswice
  • Orthlaueswica 1121 AC
  • Ordlaweswyk 1247 FF

Etymology

Orleswick (lost) is Laneswice in DB, Orthlaueswica in 1121 (AC), Ordlaweswyk in 1247 (FF) and appears as Orgleswick (1696), Orleswick (1728) in the Stewards Accounts of Buckhurst Manor (M.S.H.). 'wic of one Ordlaf .' The DB form is an error for Laueswice with curious loss of the initial element of the pers. name. Cf. however Woolavington supra 109.
