Horney Common and Gate (6″) is le Herney common , port , voc. Herney gate 1564DuLa , Hornay Common 1613FM , Harney Common 1642–9 VCH ii. 319, Horny gate 1658ParlSurv . The first name is probably a compound of hyrne and (ge)hæg, hence 'forest enclosure in the corner of land.'
