Etymology

Colgate may be associated with the family of Godelene (sic) de la Collegate (1279Ass ). In this forest area the 'gate' must be one of the gates into the forest. The first element may be a pers. name Col (l )a or it may be col , 'charcoal.' There must have been iron-smelting here as there is a Hammer Pond two miles to the south.
