Etymology

It is difficult not to think that this is from OE  hyllinga -lēage , 'clearing of the hill dwellers,' v. hyll , leah (though we should have expected a few Hull -forms) but as Hellingly is in a hollow and not on a hill one can only interpret it in that sense if we take it that the settlers who gave name to Hellingly migrated from some hill. We may note that in Jevington, a few miles away, there is a Helling Down. Unfortunately we have no ME forms for it. The form Hellingleight (1591 SRS 33, 27) shows the same curious final t as Fairlight and Hoathly supra 332, 400 and Fairlight infra 507.
