Etymology

The only pers. name with which it is possible to associate this name is Hrunting , the name of Hunferth's sword in Beowulf , a name which has its cognate parallel in ON  Hrotti , a mythological name, used also as a sword-name and cognate with OE  hrindan , 'to thrust.' We may suggest therefore that Runtington means 'Hrunta 's farm,' v. ingtun . The same pers. name (connected probably with the same person) is found in Runtingdown Wish , a field name in Hailsham (1508, 1690CplM ).
